A transcript may already be enough
Speech-to-text writes down what you say. If you dictate a finished note in its intended order, that can remove most of the keyboard work. If you speak a recap as the appointment comes back to you, the transcript may still contain repetition, changes of subject, and reminders meant for you.
AI note drafting adds a separate job: it turns that account into a document. Before buying, it helps to see the difference in actual text rather than treat every product described as dictation or a scribe as the same purchase.
The same recap, two different starting points
This fictional dictation includes a repeated follow-up and a change of direction:
"We will review the conversation next time. The client wanted to talk about asking for more predictable hours. We practiced the opening. Actually, include that the second attempt felt easier to the client. My assessment is that rehearsal helped make the request clearer. The client intends to ask for a meeting this week, then we will review how it went."
Ordinary dictation gives you that paragraph. You still decide where the response belongs, whether to keep the spoken correction, and how to combine the follow-up.
An illustrative BIRP draft could give you:
Behavior: Client discussed requesting more predictable working hours.
Intervention: Rehearsed the opening of the conversation.
Response: Client described the second attempt as easier. Therapist judged the rehearsal helpful for clarifying the request.
Plan: Client intends to request a meeting this week. Review the outcome next session.
The difference is arrangement and concise writing. This example is an illustration, not a claim about a measured model result.
Choose the job you want the tool to do
If speaking a finished note suits you, a dictation tool may be the relevant comparison. If organizing a rough recap is the remaining burden, ask to see a drafted note in the format you use. Astralcyte includes DAP, BIRP, GIRP, SOAP, and narrative, with editing in the app.
You can record the appointment or a short recap. The latter starts with the details you have already chosen. Compare the time to edit and place the text in your chart with writing that note yourself.
Private applies to both steps
A spoken recap contains patient information just as a full appointment does. Astralcyte transcribes and drafts on your device. Its privacy policy explains that neither step sends the conversation to the company. The working text stays in encrypted storage until you choose to copy the note to your record.
